I’ve been teaching at the same elementary school for more than ten years.
I’ve had good and bad times with it; I love teaching plus getting to help my students learn, however the education system does not prioritize the safety of its educators. I think there are lots of things to think about when thinking about the safety of a school, one element that is often overlooked is the health plus safety of clean, high quality air. When you’re stuck in a room with more than twenty students, it’s hard even when you’re used to germs. Our air quality needs to be the highest standards. I heard a rumor from an older educator that the air ducts hadn’t been cleaned in years. This sounded absolutely different to myself and others because I knew that air ducts should be cleaned pretty often! But air ducts experience a lot of build up, and so it’s entirely easy for small creatures to climb in and even die if there are pesticides in there. I decided to ask the office administration if I could look at the air conditioner repair history. I saw the last air duct cleaning inspection was several years prior. II called up our Superintendent plus he came out to speak with our principal about air quality standards. They finally had the Heating, Ventilation, and A/C business come to the school. They began cleaning after school was done. It took them about a week to finish the entire cleaning, and they found some gross stuff that came from the vents. I’m considering leaving the education field! I don’t like the way that our education treats the educators or the students.
