When my husband and I first started dating I was very upfront with him.
I told him all of my major downfalls and the things that he would need to look out for.
Namely, that I can be a bit of a Debbie Downer with a serious pension for overworking myself. I am what people consider to be a workaholic, through and through. What I’m left to my own devices I will sit down and start working on my job rather than finding a recreational activity. These days, my workaholism has only gotten worse. Luckily, my husband is so used to it at this point that he has figured out a few strategic ways around it. Since I’m always working in the ice cold basement, he knows that I rely heavily on my central heating, cooling, and air quality control system. We had the ductwork from our central HVAC system extended into the basement office so that I could control the indoor air temperature and air quality while I worked. This means, the central thermostat is responsible for controlling the indoor air conditions upstairs and downstairs. My husband knows that he can’t come down and interrupt me when I’m busy working without things getting hot and cold very quickly. So, now he has found a new strategy using the central HVAC system. When he needs my attention or has to interrupt my busy work day, my husband simply turns off the central heating and cooling system and uses the ductwork to call down to me. We can communicate effectively through the HVAC system, and he won’t turn the heat back on until the issue has been resolved through the ductwork.
